Authentic panama hats are handwoven in Ecuador. The craft has sustained weavers in the small village of Puzhio for over a century, but many are now dropping the tradition and leaving the country to find more lucrative work. The weavers that remain worry the tradition will disappear from Puzhio completely.

It should cost over $ 100 at least, For quality and the time of work. Gosh there are so many in recognized businesses that need to be recognized, and they need their time to shine.

You can love the craft but it doesn't pay enough. So the craft becomes hobby . Can't blame the young generation for not wanting to struggle. Its hobby now. You get paid 5 dollars while someone else sells it for 50 dollars. Leave the young generations out of your scam, they won't work for 5 dollars. $50 to $120 dollars hats .....

The problem is not the weavers. The problem is that the people that have the stores don't want to pay more to the weavers. If they all make good money the business of making hats and selling hats doesn't have to die. Besides the store owner just doesn't sell to the customers that come into the store.. now adays they sell on the internet and make money that way and they still don't want to pay the artisan that make the hats. ABSOLUTELY NOT FAIR.

Unfortunately the fashion of wearing hats has been over for a long time now. This is one of those industries that either changes in the products they make or expires. Yes, the women should get paid more, but if the product doesn't sell nobody makes money. Felt fedora makers are probably in trouble as well. In America the only sure thing was cowboy hats and even that has changed into simple caps. The weaving textile is gorgeous that these women make. I wonder if they can change into weaving something else and take control of manufacturing and distribution themselves and form a cooperative like tribal women have in Africa for their craft businesses.

You see, the main predators merchants who sale stuff like this on the street face are middle aged Americans. Americans who visited the country 20 to 30 years ago and think the cost of living has stayed the same since they went to, "Mexico" ( basically all of South America), on their honeymoon. They expect to go on vacation on an economy flight, 100$ to spend, and still expect to have some change for their groceries back home.

It would be a good option but they are Cuenca hats, they are not the genuine Panama hat. Also it is difficult to create an online store in Ecuador to sell abroad, all payment processors sell nationally and Paypal is difficult to collect if you do not have a bank account in the United States. Most of the people who sell directly from Ecuador are foreigners, the only one I see who works directly with the weavers and has fair prices is this store, they are Ecuadorians. www.viatoremspirit.store/en/

I am Ecuadorian and I am not a person that is that knowledgeable about the topic but the problem here is first that name, they are internationally know as PANAMA hat and that name is kinda difficult to erase from people's mind, and they are mainly manufactured by indigenous people (adults or elders) so is difficult to talk about technology and online selling as a small producer when you lack the education, money and skills on technology. I agree that the state or the Minister of turism could approach this in a different way but it is what it is sometimes. Also indigenous people get "robbed" because they sell the hats for really cheap prices like 3 dollars a hat, then they are bought by foreigners and sell internationally for over $100. :)

I'm also sure, the cost of those hats, are what keep them from selling . Why would a tourist want to spend thousands of their vacation dollars, on a hat. Typical business, the maker gets screwed @ $5.00 per hat. The business model is so far out of whack, its like a bubble and every bubble eventually burst .
