The dala horse is a centuries-old handicraft that has become the national symbol of Sweden. Generations of Swedish artisans at Nils Olsson Dalahästar have been making hand-carved wooden horses since 1928.

In 2019 I took road trip across the US... Stopped in Lindsborg, Kansas... Hemslojd, Inc. makes Dala horses in traditional fashion. Town is devoted to the Scandinavian culture and Dala horses decorate the streets. Of course, I got a Dala in honor of my Father's heritage ❣

Dala horses, lights in every window, rice pudding, smorgasbord. That has always been Christmas in my family. The sight of those horses make my heart warm.

My father carves these horses in the hundreds at home, then turn them in to the facility where they get painted. He gets around 2 dollars a piece and they sell for atleast 20 dollars.. I actually have 2 cutouts ready to be refined that he gave me together with a knife after I wished to get one for christmas. There's a specific way to make each cut and with some practice you can go from 1 hour to 15 minutes for a horse in a few weeks.

Interesting! We also have a traditional red horse but instead of wood, it's paper mache and called as "taka." 🇵🇭

We dont have much money but we WILL NOT buy mass-produced made in china junk. My grandparents taught my parents who taught me how to be patient and save up a little more money to buy things that are made by those who put real craftsmanship into their product . Another key ethic is to not fund places like commie china

Uuhhmmm.... A Dala maid here. The orangy red paint used for the Dalahästar is NOT the Falu red paint. That paint has pigment in it hailing from the Falu Copper Mine (a.k.a. granny, or mormor) and is in it's most traditonal red colour deep red with no orange tones in it what so ever. Also it is used for outdoors walls, as the pigment will rub off on your fingers or clothes when touched. Sorry but the video is wrong. The two paints are not only made differently but also has two different red nuances/shades.

Why care if it's made by hand? Using ban saws isn't exactly by hand. If you can get something made less expensive, faster, better quality my wouldn't you? It's like saying you can get a better operation at this hospital, for half the price, by more experienced surgeons, with a faster recovery time but you pass on it to get an ancient Greek who never saw the inside of the human do the surgery you were gullible enough to be brainwashed.

@polar bear that isn't true at all as far as quality goes. The only thing I can attest to as hand made being better in quality Ave durability than mechanized made is in weaving cloth. The ancients weaved fabrics so fine air ac water couldn't penetrate. Impossible to replicate with machines in any age. Mechanized labor doesn't denote a lack in quality. Oak wood is oak wood. Whether it's shaped by a mora or a Craftsman saw. The quality of the wood does not deter based on what shapes it. Also, let's not pretend to care about culture when diversity is the rule in a global economy. Every country is just like the other now. It's sad. In the 1970s when one went back packing through Europe or Asia, each region was different. The food, the culture, the architecture, the culture, the religion. Today backpack that exact route and there is little to no difference in experience in anything from food to culture to people from beginning to end or anywhere in between. In the late 60s I did the Camino Santiago and the application trail. Not because I like to hike but because I wanted to see where pagans hiked to be reborn into adults. I also wanted to see how modern religions usurp, destroy, confiscate and absorb from everyone before them. Each town was like a new world. Each village having their own beliefs, their own heritage etc. The differences between the birth and the south in those days were immense. When one chose to raise their family in a state, town, they were really making a statement about the way of life and the values they deemed worthy of passing on to their children. I again did both two years ago. The entire lengths were the same from beginning to end. The only thing changing were the faces seen. So let's not pretend to care about culture. Today, Whether you are in Denmark, London, Milan or Albuquerque everything and everyone is just the same. I'm all for this hand made, but local. Don't get me wrong. Just not for the lying that goes with it. Well I shouldn't say lying. Maybe more of a wilful delusion or hypocrisy is a better word.

Things made by hand are usually higher quality and have details that cant be replicated by a machine. Also it keeps the culture alive

It should be pointed out that colour is from one specific mine, which is Falun koppargruva. Today the mine is closed; however, in its prime was one of the largest copper mines in Europe. The paint is made out of the mine's tailings (a restproduct from the mine), consisting of hematite, iron(III)oxide that gives its red colure. If you are a metallurgy geek like myself, I can recommend visiting the mine in Falun. Today, only one copper mine is still open in Dalaran, the mine in Garpenberg owned by Boliden.
